Dallas Nicholas Broadcasts to World Via Radio Blog

The Dallas F. Nicholas Sr. Elementary School Community School Radio program gives students hands-on experience producing original radio programming. Every year, four academically talented students from the 4th and 5th grades are selected to participate.

As the radio program instructor during the 2008-09 school year, I worked to create a lesson plan that teaches the arts of interviewing, public speaking and recording audio while keeping students engaged and energetic every step of the way. Meeting once a week, usually Friday afternoons, hardly a day went by without the students getting behind the mics or putting on headphones to monitor audio levels.

This year, student-producers highlighted the accomplishments of their peers during a series of studio interviews. Some of our guests included student council members and honor roll students. We also showcased the work of some of our radio program participants. Here are a few of our more recent projects:

Terri's Interview With Michelle

Jamia's Interview With Tyi'Sean

Jawi's Interview With Tanaysha

Dima's Interview With Peter

Michael Karelis graduated from Goucher College with a degree in communications in May 2009. He spent his junior and senior year working as the Dallas Nicholas Community School Radio instructor and as the editor of Goucher's Community Based Learning blog.
